What Does The Tongue Look Like In Patients With Myasthenia Gravis?

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease that interrupts nerve signals to muscles. Typical problems include weakness of facial muscles, arm and leg weakness and breathing problems. The tongue can be affected though usually it appears normal. A sensation of tongue swelling without actual tongue enlargement has been described. The appearance of the tongue in people with myasthenia gravis may be abnormal, including: • Atrophy – the tongue (or parts of it) appear smaller or wasted • Fasciculations – the tongue appears to quiver or twitch • Weakness – an inability of the tongue to move properly
